In the term 105 during the Culture Media class, I met seven students, four international students and three American SIU students, in the Wham building, specifically in the hallway of this building. We discussed some topics that are related to the American’s social life, such as family and education.
The first topic is, Americans have many types of family such as nuclear family, single parent family, extended family, and childless family. The nuclear is one that consists of a mother and father. It is the most common in the US because it can be a nurturing environment in which to raise children as long as there is love, time to focus on children’s development , emotional support, low stress, and a stable economic environment.
The second topic is the US education system and the Saudi Arabian education system. The education system in the US is different from the other education systems for many reasons. The education system in US cares for many things such as students, teachers, environment, technology, knowledge, and experience. Also, parents, students, community members, and governments always evaluate it. Moreover, it focuses on the information that is related to the student’s lives.
The third topic is the influence of media on American people. First of all, they think media is a good source of information and entertainment. The media play an important role in people’s lives: for example, it gives us a perception of various cultures, religions and beliefs. We will see how the people turn to media to learn about morals, values and interpersonal relationships from the media. In fact, the media has a great effect on the society and in our life experience. We sometimes try to apply these concepts to our everyday life. For example, teenagers like to watch TV shows about love, fashion, relationship, violence, speed and many other things.
In conclusion, this class is the best CESL class because it helps me to communicate with others, especially American students, and helps me to improve my English skills, such as speaking, listening, and writing. Also, I recognize American culture in different ways, such as holidays, customs, educations, laws, and lifestyles. I hope to continue this class in the next term.

The CESL weblog system even today remains open to all CESL students and faculty who want to use it to show what we do and what we can do. It may be difficult to imagine what true freedom of speech is like, but it relies on people using it for what it is intended for. It relies on our constant membership in a community that is concerned about what is said and shown in public. Please keep several things in mind.

1. Switching languages inherently leaves many people out; this is an English-speaking community, and in order for us to trust you you must teach us all your language first; you don't have time for that. You can of course do as you wish on your own weblog.

2. Switching languages of the entire system is of course something you can do; you can also destroy the entire system. But PLEASE DON'T. We use it. We like it. It is part of our class and our program. You can be sure that if you forced us, we would start over, and that if we had to start over, YOUR VOICE WOULD NO LONGER BE WELCOMED.

3. Making comments is ordinarily good and helpful. The above rules apply. We are adults. In order to keep our privileges we should behave. We welcome your contributions. If you have an attitude about CESL, what it does or how it does it, learn good English, say it in English, and follow the right channels. Thank you.

You may have noticed a change in CESL's main web site. It's not done yet, but the new web site will be much simpler, without many of the class pages, class links, and directories that it used to have.

There are many reasons for this; among them, they were hard to sustain, and the university is getting increasingly sensitive about pictures on its sites. The present web site will be used mostly for showing what the program is: its schedule, its costs, etc. Most of the other things you could do on the web will now be done at the Moodle, here on the weblogs, or not at all.

My favorite athlete is Zinadin Zidan.First, I like Zinadin Zidan because he has world cup champion, european champion, and serie A champio. Second, Zinadin Zidan he has much skill and invention. he has nice performance. He has could score from anywhere. Third, the culmination of his,France organized public celebration in the streets. Many people chant ''Zidane the President''. In conclusion, from my point view Zinadin Zidan considered one of the greatest players of all time.

new web sites

SIUC has now switched the entire cesl webpage system. Instead of http://www.siu.edu/~cesl, we are now http://cesl.siuc.edu/. Old webpages like http://www.siu.edu/~cesl/students/rock/eap2.html are now redirected automatically to http://cesl.siuc.edu/students/rock/eap2.html.

There are a number of results of this, and things to remember. First, the weblogs aren't affected. They are on Blogger (Google territory); they didn't change. CESL has about 40 weblogs (all have blogspot in the URL) but over 300 webpages. The webpages all changed.

First, you should change all your bookmarks. SIUC has said they will redirect indefinitely, and probably they will. But the new URL is the real one; the old one is gone, really. Try to use the new one. And remember- it's SIUC, not SIU!

Second, business cards? Brochures? Messages? Links? One at a time, we have to change them all. It's not so bad if we do it a little at a time.

Finally, help CESL keep an eye out for broken links, etc. This huge number of pages is in constant need of upgrading and repair in general. Any way anyone can help, please do! We'd love to link to you and your country, just on general principle, anyway!

Carbondale's storm

By now most of us know a little more about Carbondale's storm, which hit on Fri. May 8, and caused big damage all over town. It happened on graduation day; this was difficult for graduates and visitors, but by now cleanup crews have begun to remove and saw trees; Carbondale is busy at work to repair the damage. Meanwhile a new term has started...welcome to 093!

Carbondale was hit with an "inland hurricane" on Friday. There were tornados in the area, but what we saw was just intense winds. It knocked over trees, which ruined houses, buildings, cars, etc.; in general the area is a mess, and there's no power. The Dangers of Playing Violent Video Game

We all actually know how harmful violent video games are. violent video games are realy dangerous and they have negative effects. Many murderers and killers were violent video players. The government must make selling violent video games prohibited. That will actually help us to protect out children specifically and raise them in a real way. However, we should encourage them to do other activities such as sport games. Also, all teachers and parents must teach children not to hurt any one with any kind of weapon. Finally, our children are our responsibility; we should take care of them because they are society's future.

Summary

According to the author, she states that if you use computer a long time, you must feel tired and get some physical problems such as low back pain, horrible pain, and so on. Ergonomic problems, which include Carpal tunnel syndrome and aching back, have been increasingly common in modern society; however, nobody has noticed what the causes are.
First, in general we don't think that we have any physical problems in our bodies, but routine position and routine life undermine our bodies, especially computer work. On the other hand, we have solutions to ease this pain.
According to the article, treatment is very simple. The author suggests we should do proper exercise, take some medicine and keep god posture.
In addition, sometimes we need physical therapy, which can provide stretching, evaluation and correct exercises for our problems. If we do this constantly, we will be fine.
In conclusion, money is important, but you can't do anything without your health.

Reaction

In present-day life, computer is one of the necessities of life. Moreover, we can do anything through internet. On the other hand, computer often causes some physical disease. It is clear current research reports many articles about computer pain. I'm interested in these diseases, because physical therapists have been active in this field recently. That is why I chose this article. I think physical therapy deeply relates to problems, which are caused by modern society.
Next, I want to talk about computer pain as well. In my opinion, approximately most people have the problem of computer pain in their life, because computer has been widespread all over the world. Computer pain is a serious problem, but nobody is aware of it.
I think it is a more serious problem than computer pain itself. I want to say something as a physical therapist. If people can become aware of this problem, they can treat it by themselves. Then, they must remove the pain finally. Proper exercise gives us a good body and reduces stress, but if you don't pay close attention to your body, your computer pain will never recover I think. It will be chronic pain. I have to protect people from these diseases of modern society as a physical therapist.

Survey results

This survey is about how Carbondale community likes Saluki way. During the survey, some people were wondering what is saluki way. A little explanation is necessary before the results. In September the 14th 2005 Daily Egyptian it is about “a plan to re-center the campus around new academic buildings, a new football stadium and a revamped indoor-sports arena.” The chancellor Wendler launched this plan. He said that “The changes will give SIUC a fresh, updated "front door," that will welcome the campus community and visitors to a central location the University can be proud of and will replace athletic facilities, some of which are crumbling and outdated.” (Chancellor Wendler unveils "Saluki Way", Retrieved February 28, 2008 from http://spotlight.siu.edu/09142005/SalukiWay.html). Since then, fund has been rose for saluki way and recently a half percent tax increase has been decided to provide more funds.

The survey has concerned 25 people formed with 15 male persons and 10 female persons. It was amazing to see that women like football more than men: 60% of the former versus 46.67% of the latter. It appears that more than half percent of the questioned persons like saluki football and go to Saluki game at least 10 times a year. A quarter of the survey participants really go to saluki game four times a month. However 60% of persons think that building saluki way is not necessary and more than half percent clearly mean that they prefer the funds to be used to advertise good educational system and focus on benefits of education instead of using them on football stadium building. Most of them (64%) disagree with the tax increase and almost all of the participants (88%) think that tax increase is too much. In conclusion People think that they need sports in the campus but not insomuch to spend money on it.

I did this survey in the Students Center at SIUC. I can say that people are very cooperative in participating to a survey. For some of them it was an occasion to tell their opinion about Saluki Way, because it has been a popular issue these days. People's opinion is logical. It is rational to focus on what the school purpose is, actually always to enhance the education given. What I retain is how the project can keep going when apparently lots of people disagree. As a foreigner, I feel that I need to learn more about how decisions are taken in this community and how people participate.

CESL students I'm sure have noticed a thick layer of ice on everything, especially the roads and sidewalks. Be careful! Radio and television reports say: Don't go anywhere unless it's absolutely necessary! CESL teachers will understand if you had trouble getting to school. Salt and sand will be applied to roads and sidewalks as soon as possible; walk carefully; watch television and study the news reports until you feel you can get where you're going safely!

Our Flickr account (a good number of our photos) disappeared into thin air- we are trying to get to the bottom of it. Maybe it was hacked, or just deleted by Flickr itself. Be patient- if we can get the photos back, we will!

Also, students who use Firefox are having trouble- copying and pasting onto Blogger, or, in some cases, uploading material onto a weblog that then doesn't print, or appears as a ghost-post. We don't know what's going on with this. Is Blogger fighting with Firefox? Who knows? Safari still works, but that's all I can tell you for now.

Minor League baseball has come to Southern Illinois, in the form of this new team, the Miners. The team is in Marion, about a half-hour drive, and tickets are $5-$8 each, with games all summer though not every day.

Minor League baseball means relaxing fun, not the best quality baseball, but usually good games with players who might be famous in the future (on their way up). Usually the people are friendly and people like to talk baseball, if you don't know all the details. It may not be as exciting as the Ittihad-Hilal game, but for us baseball fans, it's baseball at its best, its players not corrupted by fame & media. Try it!

Want to put one on your blog? On our LMC & CESL lab macs the process is like this.

1. Open up the picture you like by clicking on it. Move the window to one side of your screen, then
DRAG the photo over onto your desktop.

2. Now open the CREATE POST window. On the top, to the left of the main box, you'll see two icons; the right one is a tjat square that is half blue. Click on this square. Where it asks you to Choose file, choose the one on your desktop, whatever you choose to call it. Once it's uploaded, you can put it wherever you want in your post, or even on your template.

By the way, PICTURES FROM OTHER SOURCES are not as good, because someone might own them and not want you to borrow them. At least with the CESL site, you already have permission.

I'm not sure exactly what it means, but one of the biggest changes is:
We have to use an E-MAIL ADDRESS AS A LOG ON.

Our password is the same as ever. If you don't know it, ask the teacher.

Here's an essay contest you might win. Warning: you might want to pay attention to the prize.

Carbondale's mayor, Brad Cole, announced that his New Year's resolution was to get married, but, he doesn't have anybody in mind. So some friends of his decided to find somebody. Interested?

One good thing about Mayor Cole is that he's a worldly guy. He got a friendship plaza built as an international gesture to our sister cities, and he's been abroad. Furthermore, he always talks to our students when we send them to him for information or an interview.

So, good luck in the essay contest!
